Satellite radio is a digital or analogue radio where you subscribe to the radio service. It is like cable television in terms of the wider area range, unlike the traditional radio stations. This is because the radio signal is being relayed using satellite/s.
The satellite radio offers radio lovers a whole new level of experience including commercially free music, wide coverage, programming variety, and clean digital signal. The radio signal transmitted by the satellite could cover millions of square kilometers, offering coverage from coast to coast. Satellite radio offers different music channels where you can choose your genre of choice – country, R&B, jazz, rock, Latin, Christian, classical, pop, hip-hop, or electronic. There are also news, talk, entertainment, and sports channels. Unlike the AM radio, which could be affected by static and interferences, satellite radio has clean digital signal that is almost CD-like in quality.
To have satellite radio, you will need four things: satellite radio antenna, satellite radio receiver, satellite radio tuner, and a subscription. Home and car kits usually include antennas and portable boomboxes. If you have in-dash receivers, external satellite radio tuners, and home component tuners, you need to purchase antennas separately. The satellite signal is transmitted to the receiver from the antenna through a satellite radio tuner. Only in-dash receivers need external tuners. The controls for displaying song information, artist, and channel, and selecting categories and channels are located on the satellite radio receiver. Dock & Play tuners, car stereos, and home component-style tuners have built-in receivers. Finally, a subscription is needed to get satellite radio. Currently there are two providers for satellite radio – XM and Sirius. You must activate subscription to either these providers first before you could receive programming.
Radio has developed much from the traditional AM/FM radio. Now satellite radio is already available. It has enhanced the ability of people to communicate especially because of the wider coverage range and better signal quality. The downside to using satellite radio is payment of monthly fees. But other than this, you get to enjoy your radio more.
